Art Walk with Ashraf Jamal: Figuration vs. Abstraction: Where Do We Stand Today?

February 22, 2025
4:00 – 5:00 PM
Cape Town International Convention Centre
Lower Long Street 1, 8001, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

A guided Art Walk led by art critic Ashraf Jamal exploring abstraction vs. figuration in the context of today.

In 2022, art writer and researcher, Mary Corrigall noted the proliferation of portraiture circulating amongst artists from Africa within dedicated galleries and fairs. ‘Is this a short-lived trend?’ she questioned. In the same year, Ashraf Jamal noted a similar proliferation towards abstraction, suggesting that ‘no other artform better illuminates the ravages and hope of our current climate.’

Three years on, and where do we stand today? Both figuration and abstraction form an evident dichotomy in today’s art landscape, so this walkabout will offer a seasoned interpretation of these depictive trends today.
